Hola Mohalla 1999 was a time of great celebration. The tercentenary of Guru Gobind Singh’s Baisaki was just around the corner and Anandpur Sahib was buzzing with energy and expectation. This crackle of energy was picked up by the Nihang Singhs during their 3-days Mela making their annual martial displays all the more vivid, dramatic and heartfelt. The devout soldiers and beautiful horses charged through the parade ground with a spirit and fervour that give the feeling of times past when these fearless warriors defended the Sikh faith from those who would see it disappear.

"I can honestly say I don't think I've ever had a day so full of adrenalin, excitement and ecstacy in my entire life"
- Nick's Wife, Guru Kaur
This photograph is the living reminder of the martial code set by the beloved Guru Gobind Singh. The majesty of this senior Nihang Singh, riding his fine Marwari white stallion, surrounded by his foot soldiers, encapsulates the Sikh military tradition. The fearlessness of the warrior saints running through the river and the noise of the galloping hooves serve as a reminder of all the fierce battles that they have fought. See the shimmer of the sword of the soldier at the head of the group set against the timelessness of the Himalayan foothills that so pointedly mark this sacred land.
Nick
Fleming has enjoyed incredible close access to the Nihang's way of life
for extended periods. For over 8 months he lived amongst the Nihangs,
has been put to work in the kitchen’s making chaapatis and serving
langar. He has travelled from village to village with their Daal. Most
importantly Nick has portrayed their daily existence in the glory and
honour that it deserves.
Nihangs are fearless and they take
no slack from outsiders. To get the kind of access required to get such
an intimate photo Nick has invested countless days and patience winning
their trust and respect.
“I wait until people are so
comfortable with my presence that I become seen but not noticed so that
they continue with what they were doing unperturbed by having a camera
right up close to them.” - Nick Fleming

“In the hands of a lesser man and photographer these images would have been voyeuristic. Far from it when Nick is holding the camera. There is a subtlety and honouring. We learn who is the subject of each image clearly, gaining a direct experience without Nick getting in the way. It is as if we are the true witnesses of the moment directly with no interference.”

“Hola Mohalla 1999” is a totally unique and one-of-a-kind image.
Nick Fleming is an acclaimed professional photographer and
photojournalist who routinely exhibits in London sells photographic
prints to collectors, individuals and large corporations.
However, at this last exhibition in the cultural wing of the Indian High Commission (Nehru Centre), two young Sikh youths approached Nick and asked him how much was the photo of Hola Mohalla 1999? A look of sad disappointment spread across their faces as they realised they couldn't afford the photographic print.
Nick realised there are many of you who's lives would be touched by being able to experience this photo everyday but who could not afford the fine art print. As a result, Nick resolved to recreate the photograph on a less expensive medium...
